The Rhode Island General Assembly passed the “Rhode Island Baby Bond Trust” (H 6071 / S 0761), a visionary step toward closing the racial wealth gap and expanding opportunity for Rhode Island’s most vulnerable children. This legislation, introduced by Senator Melissa Murray and Representative Joshua Giraldo at the request of Treasury, will create the legal framework for a baby bond program. This is a bold step forward for economic equity in Rhode Island. By giving every child, a foundation for future investment, we’re creating the conditions for upward mobility and long-term financial stability. This state was founded on the ideal of hope and that’s exactly what this program will do – give children hope for their future.
Passage of the Resilient Rhody Infrastructure Fund
The Rhode Island General Assembly passed the “Resilient Rhody Infrastructure Fund” (H 6252 / S 1070), introduced at the request of Rhode Island Treasury and the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank (RIIB) by Senate Majority Leader Ciccone and Representative Cortvriend. This landmark legislation establishes a dedicated revolving fund within the RIIB to support local climate resiliency projects. The Fund will provide long-term financing for projects such as stormwater mitigation, coastal erosion control, floodproofing, and urban greening. It builds on the success of the Municipal Resilience Program and positions Rhode Island as a national leader in climate infrastructure readiness.
Assault Weapons Ban Becomes Law
Yesterday signified real progress in Rhode Island as Governor Dan McKee signed the Assault Weapons Ban into law. Gun violence impacts every community in some way, and as the former Mayor of Central Falls, I saw its devastating effects firsthand. We will continue protecting our children and ensuring safer futures for all Rhode Islanders. The work isn’t over, and we will keep fighting. Thank you to the advocates, bill sponsors and leadership for getting this legislation over the finish line.
