Jarrod Smith, 43, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud.
Smith admitted to participating in a scheme that involved using stolen information, primarily from business checks, to create counterfeit checks, according to Miron Bloom. These fake checks were then deposited into bank accounts from people that he or other members of the conspiracy had recruited or enticed, frequently through social media.
Shortly after the checks were deposited, Smith or another member would withdraw the money from the accounts.
Miron Bloom said the individuals whose bank accounts were used were paid for allowing their accounts to be used in the scheme.
Smith is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 19.
