RIBS: April Events and Announcements

First, we want to congratulate Marlon Carey (RIBS Storyteller) and Sara Monteiro (who produced our FUNDA FEST Words and Music event the past 2 years) for being award winners! Sara won for Best Producer, Marlon and Regie Gibson for Shakespeare to Hip Hop! and Marlon won Best Live Storytelling.

Peter Chand who did a workshop for RIBS last year will be performing!

 Peter Chand is a storyteller from the UK of Indian descent. An excellent Storyteller, he will also be coming to Providence and will be available for school programs and workshops during the first week of May. INTERESTED IN BOOKING PETER FOR A SCHOOL PERFORMANCE?

For our Legacy Academy in May:

Masankho Banda will be here from Malawi!

Masankho is an African Dancer & Storyteller. He learned the fine arts of storytelling and dance from his Malawian culture spending many long days and nights listening to stories and dancing to music that captivated his mind, shaped his being, nourished his soul and strengthened his spirit. Using performing arts, Masankho motivates and inspires people of all ages to work together to bring about peace, social justice and cultural understanding. In 1997, he started Ucandanc African Healing Arts to bring his passion for dance and storytelling to communities around the world. In 2001, Masankho was awarded the Unsung Hero of Compassion by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Masankho will be available for stories 17th -29th of May.

Sidy Maiga, one of Funda Fest’s past performers will be there along with the RIBS Storytellers! Join in the celebration of the 350th Anniversary of North Kingstown and find out how Casey Farm fits into the local history of the seaside village of Saunderstown with farm tours at your own pace between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. See the farmhouse museum gallery, Casey family cemetery, plus markers honoring African American and Indigenous peoples.

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!

Don’t forget there is an exhibit by the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society ongoing in Newport.

The exhibition at Rosecliff, “Gilded Age Newport in Color,” offers many insights into the city’s 19th-century African-heritage community – including the involvement of Black Newporters in the struggle for social and legal justice.
