“At the end of April, I contracted a virus, and have had subsequent health complications stemming from this affliction. Unfortunately, those complications have prohibited my return to the Senate at this time, but I am receiving treatment and hope to return soon,” said Ruggerio.
In a statement, the senator said he plans to run for reelection this year, and continue serving as president.
Ruggerio announced in April that he was diagnosed with cancer.
Senate District 4 includes parts of North Providence and Providence.
Ruggerio became Senate president in March 2017.
He was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and served in the House before that.
