Special Olympics RI kicks off 2024 Summer Games

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Special Olympics Rhode Island’s Summer Games are back!

The 2024 games will take place from May 31–June 2 at the University of Rhode Island. The annual event gives athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete in a handful of sports, including bowling, track and field, soccer, swimming, and powerlifting.

Volunteers, staff and athletes gathered Wednesday for the second annual “Truck Day.”

The weekend kicked off Friday afternoon with the Torch Run. Local law enforcement led the way to the R.I. State House, followed by hundreds of athletes.

Opening ceremonies were held at URI’s Meade Stadium and emceed by 12 News anchor Mike Montecalvo.

The weekend’s competition schedule is as follows:

Saturday, June 1

  • Bowling: 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
  • Unified Soccer and Soccer Skills: 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • Track and Field: 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Athlete Social: 7 p.m.

Sunday, June 2

  • Swimming: 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Powerlifting: 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Closing Ceremonies: 2:30 p.m.
