Two killed after crash on I-195 east in New Bedford
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WJAR) — A tragedy this morning led to major traffic impacts on I-195 in New Bedford.
Massachusetts State Police announced that two people have died and three were taken to the hospital after the crash on I-195 east on Friday morning.
According to state police, they responded to a crash on I-195 east near exit 24A at around 9:35 a.m.
“She said it was very bad, she thought there were some fatalities,” said Carol Frates from New Bedford. “That’s not good.”
State police said a vehicle carrying five people rolled over in the crash.
The rollover led to personal belongings scattering across the highway causing two lanes to be closed off for a few hours.
The delay caused traffic to back up for miles.
“I started driving around 12:30 and now what is it 2, I finally got to my destination,” said another driver from New Bedford. “Probably an hour, maybe a little longer. I finally just took the Dartmouth exit and it was still going on for miles.”
While traffic is not new to the city of New Bedford, the seriousness of the accident led to warnings from other drivers.
“I mean now a days there are crazy drivers out there, you just need to be aware of your surroundings and have eyes everywhere and slow down sometimes. Just sad, I feel for the family, I hope that’s not the case, I’m sorry for the family.”
Massachusetts State Police says the entire accident remains under investigation but all of the lanes on I-195 are now back open.
