PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A mosquito sample collected in Providence on June 29 has tested positive for West Nile virus, state health and environmental officials announced Thursday.
It’s the first time the virus has been detected in Rhode Island this year, officials said.
Throughout mosquito season, which runs all the way through summer and fall, the state gathers samples from different areas each week and tests them for West Nile virus, eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) and other diseases they can carry. Those results are posted here.
